From the Ideas of Thai Youth to a Real-World Space Learning Platform
The dream of space exploration for Thai youth is no longer confined to the classroom. The GISTDA CubeSat-1, conceptualized and designed by Thai students, has officially soared into orbit.
This educational satellite was launched aboard a Long March-6C rocket from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in Shanxi, China, on August 25, 2026, alongside seven other satellites. It successfully entered its target orbit, and the ground control station in Si Racha District, Chonburi, has already established communication and received signals from the satellite.
The development of GISTDA CubeSat-1 is a key milestone of the second year of the School Satellite Project, organized by the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA). The program provides high school and university students the opportunity to propose mission concepts and learn the end-to-end process of designing, assembling, and testing a real satellite.
Participants collaborated on the Engineering Model of a 3U CubeSat (30 × 10 × 10 centimeters), engaging in Satellite Mission Design, subsystem assembly and testing, and Environmental Verification Testing (EVT). Throughout the process, they received close mentorship from GISTDA engineers leveraging their direct experience from the THEOS-2A and upcoming THEOS-3 missions.
Building upon the students' original competition entries, the finalized GISTDA CubeSat-1 was refined under the guidance of GISTDA engineers to ensure full operational capability. Its primary mission is to monitor agricultural zones, vegetation, forestry, water resources, and land-use changes, ultimately supporting the nation’s natural resource management and environmental tracking.
The satellite's core systems were intricately integrated to operate efficiently despite the strict size, weight, and power constraints inherent to the CubeSat standard.
GISTDA CubeSat-1 was intentionally designed as an accessible learning platform with streamlined systems tailored for educational use. Now that it is operational, GISTDA will allow Thai youth to conduct real satellite operations under expert supervision. This hands-on experience covers mission planning, telemetry tracking, data reception and analysis, and transmitting commands from the ground station. These students are poised to become the foundational workforce of Thailand’s future space industry.
This achievement stems from robust collaboration across the government, educational, and private sectors. Each partner provided specialized expertise—from manufacturing and testing to launch and mission control. Engineers continuously monitored, inspected, and provided technical feedback to ensure the project met rigorous design standards and mitigated risks throughout the process.
The School Satellite Project has also acted as a catalyst for other youth-led space initiatives. A notable success is the CUSAT group (Chulalongkorn University Satellite and Space Technology Club), which was selected to develop the CUSAT-1 satellite for deployment from the International Space Station under the 9th Round of the KiboCUBE Programme. To support this environmental monitoring mission, GISTDA provided technical consultation, laboratory access, and equipment. CUSAT stands as a prime example of how this initiative elevates Thai youth to international standards.
By bridging the creativity of the younger generation with the expertise of Thai space engineers and broader industrial partnerships, GISTDA CubeSat-1 establishes a vital foundation. It inspires and upskills a new generation of innovators, driving the Thai space ecosystem toward sustainable, global competitiveness.
