Unlocking Agro-Value: SGiFarm Empowers Farmers with Traceability Platform for Sustainable Growth

   As climate volatility and rising production costs squeeze farmers, a growing number of Thai agricultural producers are no longer waiting at the mercy of the skies. Instead, they're turning to satellite and geo-informatics data to manage their farms and plots with far greater precision — not just to boost the volume and quality of their harvests, but to raise the value of Thai agricultural products through a traceability system that tracks output all the way back to its source, giving consumers confidence in what they buy. 

   This is the story of "SGiFarm" — a platform designed to elevate Thai agricultural production through geo-informatics innovation, developed in 2025 by the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (Public Organization), or GISTDA. The platform is emerging as a key tool in transforming traditional farming into "smart agriculture," offering a stable and sustainable income stream for the farming communities that form the backbone of the country. 

   Over the past year, 3,500 Thai farmers across 64 farmer groups nationwide have used SGiFarm to manage data on their plots. The platform has helped add value to 64 agricultural products, with more than 24 universities and local agencies partnering to roll it out and support farmers under their care.

   The platform's success traces back to fieldwork and conversations with farmers grappling with real problems on the ground. What emerged was a clear need: advance knowledge of critical conditions on their own plots — weather patterns, whether rain would fall in the next day or two before sowing rice — so they could plan planting around actual conditions. Farmers also wanted tools to record essential field data, log cultivation activities and production standards, and store it all in a way that was fast and easy to access. And once the harvest came in, there was the perennial challenge of selling at a fair price, given how often crop prices collapse.

   Thanakorn Sanguantrakul, a geo-informatics specialist at the Office of Geo-Informatics Development and Application, GISTDA, said these needs shaped the development of a practical tool under the "Project to Upgrade Agricultural Production Using Modern/Smart Technology through Community-Participatory Geo-Informatics Innovation." The project set an ambitious target: raising the growth rate of value for geographical-indication (GI) products, GAP-certified safe agriculture, organic farming, processed agricultural goods, and smart farming by 25–50% — well above the 4–15% targets set out in Thailand's 20-year national strategy.

   SGiFarm allows farmer groups and community enterprises to manage their own data from upstream to downstream. The platform is built for ease of use, with a data-logging system that creates a systematic production record. Farmers can use it to store the information needed to register as farmers and to document production standards, while also logging cultivation activities, costs, yields and income throughout the growing season — data that then feeds into planning for the following season.

   At the same time, SGiFarm gives farmers access to critical data sources specific to their own plots. This includes satellite and geo-informatics data and weather information — hourly forecasts and a 7-day outlook — drawn via API from the Thai Meteorological Department. It also delivers satellite-image-based disaster analysis, tracking drought risk through an on-plot risk index with cultivation advice to help farmers assess conditions and make planting decisions at each risk level; flood monitoring, showing flooded areas as well as flood-risk zones; and tracking of burn scars and hot spots on and around plots, so farmers can monitor, verify and assess situations that could damage their crops. The platform also provides vegetation health data (NDVI) to help farmers track crop condition efficiently, and carbon sequestration and emissions data for each plot, linked to the Carbon Atlas API — a trend set to become increasingly important for agriculture worldwide.

   Crucially, the systematic production data stored on the platform allows farmers' goods to carry a full "traceability" system. SGiFarm generates a product QR code linking data on the plot, the production process, certified standards, and the story of the farmer group behind it — building trust and adding value to the goods produced by participating farmer groups and community enterprises.

   The clearest proof of SGiFarm's impact, though, is the real income growth among farmer groups who have used the platform to elevate their products and build consumer trust. Durian growers in several regions, for instance, have upgraded to premium, chemical-free durian, using QR code tags on the fruit itself and on processed-product labels — giving consumers the confidence to pay a fair price for high-quality durian whose growing origin and standards can be verified. Organic rice growers who once sold their product for 60–80 baht per kilogram have been able to raise prices to 120–150 baht per kilogram after attaching SGiFarm's traceability QR code, as consumers gained confidence in the organic standards behind the rice after scanning to verify it.

   GISTDA continues to work directly with farming communities and local agencies, gathering plot-level data and running training sessions to spread knowledge of SGiFarm's geo-informatics tools and the traceability system, aiming to raise the value of goods produced by farmer groups, community enterprises and large-scale farming collectives.

   Looking ahead, the GISTDA team plans to further develop the system for more detailed plot-level analysis, displayed through an easy-to-read dashboard, complete with mobile alerts and recommendations — functioning as a kind of "assistant" that helps farmers stay ahead of and respond to climate change in real time.

   Through collaboration across sectors to put space and geo-informatics technology to use for everyone under the "GI for All" policy, GISTDA expects to expand SGiFarm to 50 more farmer groups, add traceability to 50 more agricultural products, and benefit 3,000 additional farmers by 2027.
