THEOS-2A Satellite Preparing for Early 2026 Launch


Scheduled for launch in early 2026, THEOS-2A represents a significant achievement for Thailand, with Thai engineers having played a major role in its design and development. Its mission is to furnish Thailand with valuable data from space and to enhance the overall preparedness of the nation's industry.

 

THEOS-2A is designated as Thailand's third high-resolution Earth observation satellite, following the predecessors THEOS-1 and THEOS-2. Its development was a collaborative effort between the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) and Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd. of the United Kingdom.

 

GISTDA intends to deploy this satellite into a Sun-Synchronous Orbit at an approximate altitude of 550 kilometers. Categorized as a SmallSat, THEOS-2A has a mass of approximately 100 kilograms. Over 20 Thai satellite engineers were integral to the development of various payloads, encompassing the entire process from conceptual drafting, development, and rigorous testing, through to the final assembly with the satellite bus.

 

The installed payloads include a high-resolution Earth imaging camera, offering a 1-meter-per-pixel resolution and capable of continuous Multispectral color recording. Additional instrumentation comprises a satellite monitoring camera, a magnetometer, sun sensors, GPS receivers, a Full HD video camera, and receivers for Automatic Identification System (AIS) signals from maritime vessels and Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS-B) signals from aircraft. These systems are designed to support the missions of numerous agencies that require satellite-derived data.

 

THEOS-2A has successfully undergone all requisite pre-launch testing processes, including vibration testing simulating ascent, mass property assessment, and durability testing against the extreme temperature fluctuations characteristic of the space environment. These tests were executed at the National Assembly Integration and Test (AIT) center, a cornerstone of Thailand’s space industry infrastructure. The AIT is a certified high-standards facility, fully equipped with state-of-the-art technology, and is prepared to service both domestic and international satellites. It is situated within GISTDA’s Space Krenovation Park in Si Racha District, Chon Buri Province.

 

Currently, the THEOS-2A satellite has been transported for integration with the PSLV rocket in preparation for its impending launch from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, India, in early 2026. This milestone is considered a source of national pride, representing a New Year’s gift to Thailand, by having a satellite resulting from domestic workmanship positioned in orbit. It is poised to operate actively in conjunction with THEOS-1 and THEOS-2 to provide effective space-derived data support to relevant agencies.

 

Finally, the substantial knowledge acquired from the development of THEOS-2A is already being leveraged in the development of THEOS-3, Thailand's next high-quality Earth observation satellite. Simultaneously, this expertise is being disseminated to domestic personnel to elevate Thai capabilities, thereby ensuring the readiness to design and develop efficient, high-standard satellites, and to further apply space technology for maximum national benefit.
