Thailand joins the Artemis Accords, entering the golden age of space exploration in full force.
On December 16, Thailand signed the Artemis Accords, committing to safe and responsible space exploration and joining forces with 50 other nations under the leadership of the United States of America.
Following a signing ceremony in Bangkok, Thailand will have the opportunity to engage with the space community globally, further enhancing the nation’s capabilities in space exploration, research, policy, and education.
Dr. Pakorn Apaphant, the executive director of Thailand’s Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA), signed the Artemis Accords on behalf of Thailand. GISTDA aims to use this opportunity to elevate Thailand’s readiness for the safe and responsible exploration of the Moon, Mars, and beyond, in accordance with the Artemis Accords.
Looking back at the success of the Apollo program, which landed humankind on the Moon, and safely returned all 24 astronauts to Earth 50 years ago. The Apollo missions played a key role in the rapid development of the United States industry, rapidly developing new technologies and advancements to support human’s venture toward deep space. These advancements have also led to spinoff technologies that benefit the general public, further improving everyone’s daily life ever since.
Nowadays, humanity’s next giant leap will occur under the Artemis program, which is scheduled to return astronauts to the Moon in 2026, along with the construction of Lunar Gateway, the first space station in lunar orbit. This will be the next step of deep space research and exploration, and the foundation for the first crewed mission to Mars and beyond. We will venture back through the collaboration between international partners, continuing the trend of international cooperation seen in programs like the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station.
With the development and operations of THEOS, THEOS-2, THEOS-2A, and the upcoming THEOS-3 satellites by GISTDA, along with the development of space traffic management, tracking, space policies, and the national satellite testing and integration center. Thailand’s space readiness will provide opportunities to elevate the nation’s space industry, and inspire the next generation of children to truly become the 'Artemis Generation'
The Artemis Accords highlight collaboration, knowledge sharing, and preserving outer space heritage among the member nations. This will be a crucial opportunity for Thailand to join forces" with other nations, elevating humanity’s scientific understanding of our Solar System, driving the new space economy, and making space more relevant and accessible to everyone.
After the signing of the Artemis Accords, GISTDA and the ‘Team Thailand’ will study the possibilities of Thailand’s contribution to this partnership. GISTDA will be working very closely with NASA's Office of International and Interagency Relations, to ensure that “Thailand will enter the golden age of space exploration in full force,” according to Dr. Apaphant's statement during the signing ceremony.
