Thailand and Myanmar Cooperate to Utilize Earth Observation Technology to Enhance Capacity for Environment and Disaster Management and Environmental Conservation

On 6 August 2026, at the Government House of Thailand, the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (Public Organization), or GISTDA, and the Myanmar Space Agency signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on cooperation in the application of Earth observation technology for peaceful purposes. The signing ceremony was witnessed by Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand, and Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar.

Dr. Pakorn Apaphant, Executive Director of GISTDA, stated that the MOU aims to support cooperation between the two countries in the application of Earth observation technology and satellite information for the efficient management of natural resources, the environment, and disasters.

Thailand and Myanmar share a border of more than 2,400 kilometers and common natural resources, including forests, river basins, and interconnected ecosystems. Therefore, close cooperation in monitoring, protecting, and managing these shared resources is essential. Furthermore, natural disasters and environmental issues occurring in border areas can have significant impacts on both countries. The exchange of information and the application of Earth observation technology play a crucial role in supporting timely decision-making, monitoring, and mitigating the impacts of various situations.
