Satellite Ground Stations: The Crucial Link in Earth-to-Satellite Communication

   Satellites currently orbiting Earth would not be able to function at all without a comprehensive network of supporting systems to maintain contact, transmit and receive signals, and control operations so they can fulfill their missions.

   One of the most critical systems enabling satellite operations is the Ground Station Service. Acting as the communication hub between Earth and space, it ensures that data gathered from the cosmos is utilized to its maximum efficiency.

   Mr. Nawatakorn Kaikaew, Head of the Satellite Operations Engineering Department at GISTDA’s Satellite Operations Bureau, stated that "The Ground Station Service is a vital infrastructure component of space missions. Whether it involves receiving and transmitting satellite signals or controlling the satellites themselves. Currently, GISTDA manages both THEOS-1 (Thaichote) and THEOS-2, while also receiving signals from foreign satellites."

   Located at the Space Kenovation Park (SKP) in Sriracha District, Chonburi Province, GISTDA's ground station is capable of receiving signals in the X-band (8.0–8.5 GHz) and L-band (1.6–1.7 GHz). This coverage extends across various orbits, including:

  • Geostationary Orbit (GEO): Satellites that rotate synchronously with Earth's position.
  • Medium Earth Orbit (MEO): Utilized for weather forecasting, pollution monitoring, and wildfire tracking missions.
  • Low Earth Orbit (LEO): Earth observation satellites, including the THEOS constellation and other international satellites.

Additionally, the station has utilized S-band antennas to control THEOS-1 and THEOS-2 for nearly 20 years.

   Whenever a satellite passes over Thailand's airspace, GISTDA’s Sriracha Ground Station intercepts the data transmitted back to Earth while simultaneously monitoring the satellite's health. During these windows, operators can upload new command sets, such as capturing imagery of designated areas or executing orbital maneuvers to avoid debris or other satellites.

Beyond the transceiver antennas, a satellite ground station requires a robust backend infrastructure. This includes:

  • Computer Network Systems: For massive data storage.
  • Power Reliability: Main power grids backed up by Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) and generators to ensure seamless, uninterrupted mission operations.
  • Safety and Protection Systems: Specialized FM-200 fire suppression systems designed to protect sensitive electronics, alongside advanced lightning protection systems.

   Looking ahead, the Ground Station Service serves as the foundational infrastructure supporting future THEOS projects, which will eventually encompass a constellation of 18 Earth observation satellites. The station will secure mission control and maximize the national utility of space-derived data. Moreover, it is fully prepared to support commercial satellites from the private sector and any organization looking to leverage GISTDA's infrastructure for their missions.
