Royal Ploughing Ceremony Day: A Thai way of life marking the beginning of a new planting season with satellite technology.

 

Royal Ploughing Ceremony Day is one of the most significant days, officially designated by the government as a public holiday and Farmer’s Day. The Royal Ploughing Ceremony is held annually in May, with the exact date determined according to an auspicious time. In 2026, it falls on 13 May.

The Royal Ploughing Ceremony is an ancient royal tradition dating back to the Sukhothai period. In the past, the ceremony only involved ploughing the field and sowing seeds, led by Brahmins. It is held in the sixth month of the lunar calendar, marking the beginning of the rice cultivation season. During the reign of King Rama IV, the traditional ceremony was formalized with the addition of a Buddhist ceremony on the first day (falling on May 12, 2026) to bless the seeds with Buddhist prayers. Since then, the two royal ceremonies have been performed together — the Royal Ploughing Ceremony and First Ploughing Ceremony.

Thailand has been a primarily rice-producing country since ancient times. Because much of the country is suitable for agriculture, particularly in the central regions, it is often described as a land of abundance. Due to its floodplains and numerous rivers, the country has developed extensive irrigation systems. Furthermore, these rivers carry sediment and deposit it across the land, making the soil fertile and suitable for rice cultivation. Geography plays a key role in shaping the agricultural way of life. However, in the past, weather forecasting methods were not as accurate as they are today. As a result, the First Ploughing Ceremony — a Brahmin ritual originating from India — was adopted to bring good fortune and boost farmers’ morale. During the ceremony, priests traditionally make predictions regarding weather patterns and agricultural yields for the coming season.

This royal ceremony reflects the significance of the agriculture sector. It also represents early attempts at prediction — once based on beliefs, rituals, and environmental observation. Today, with advancements in technology, Thailand uses satellite data and geoinformatics to monitor natural disasters, predict weather patterns, and forecast agricultural production through the spatial analysis of satellite imagery.

A platform for disaster monitoring and weather prediction using empirical satellite data

- Disaster Platform (https://disaster.gistda.or.th/landing) This system supports decision-making in disaster management. Developed using satellite imagery, the platform provides near real-time data — updated hourly and daily — with access to historical records of up to 30 days. It enables farmers to monitor nationwide disasters, including floods, wildfires, drought, and air pollution. In addition, it supports pre-cultivation planning, particularly under abnormal conditions, helping to mitigate the impacts of natural disasters on agricultural productivity.

 

- Crops Drought (https://cropsdrought.gistda.or.th/) This system monitors crop water use and assesses drought risk in agricultural areas to reduce damage and enhance productivity sustainably. It integrates data to track water levels in large reservoirs and forecast drought-prone areas nationwide. The system provides forecasts of up to six months — covering rice paddies, upland crops, and perennial crops — through geospatial analysis of satellite imagery. Furthermore, it calculates water requirements for major cash crops such as rice, durian, corn, cassava, sugarcane, mango, coconut, and longan, enabling farmers to select suitable crops based on local water.

 

- Satellite-Based Small Water Source Monitoring System (SMORWAT) (https://water.gistda.or.th/) The system for monitoring small-scale water sources uses satellite technology in conjunction with ground sensors to track water levels across major river basins in all regions. A weekly water volume summary dashboard is provided, displaying the status and locations of small water sources down to the sub-district level throughout Thailand. This enables farmers to locate and assess local water availability more effectively.

A platform for agricultural area management and policy support at the plot level, enabling the transition to precision agriculture.

 

- GISTDA Ecoplant (https://ecoplant.gistda.or.th/) The satellite-based system for monitoring cash crop cultivation in Thailand tracks the growth cycles of four key crops: rice, sugarcane, maize, and cassava. These crops typically have cultivation cycles ranging from 4 to 12 months. The system monitors their growth from planting to harvest across Thailand and neighboring countries. Data is updated every two weeks to provide up-to-date information on planted areas, as well as forecasts of harvest times and yields. 

 

- Dragonfly (https://dragonfly.gistda.or.th/) The plot-based agricultural platform aims to strengthen the grassroots economy by providing a smart, integrated system with diverse functions. It covers crop health, weather conditions, natural disasters, soil conditions, diseases, and pests. The app also provides market price information, recommends fertilizer application rates for rice paddies, and forecasts yields at the individual plot level. By consolidating these functions into a single platform, it enables farmers to access essential information for decision-making and farm management while reducing operational time. The data is continuously updated to ensure that farmers receive accurate and timely information for managing their plots.

 

- Smart Geo-Informatics Farm (SGI-Farm) is a platform that enhances the value of agricultural products for farmers and farmer groups through a GIS-based QR code traceability system. This system enables verification back to the cultivation plot and farmer group level. It relies on farmers’ participation in recording cultivation activities from planting to harvest and processing in accordance with crop production standards. This information is then used to generate QR codes for product labeling, adding value, building consumer confidence, and supporting sustainable farmer incomes.

Although technology now plays a significant role in supporting the agricultural sector, the "Royal Ploughing Ceremony" remains a symbol of the beginning of the planting season and a source of encouragement for Thai farmers. Satellite technology is a crucial tool in addressing changes in weather patterns and economic fluctuations that may affect farmers' income. Data helps farmers plan and mitigate risks — building upon traditional wisdom to concretely elevate Thailand's agricultural sector.
