From Forest to a Space-Based Perspective: When forests decline, and human populations expand, lessons from wild elephants offer solutions to human–wildlife–forest conflicts through the use of satellite technology.
Earlier this month, a tragic incident occurred when a wild elephant from the Phu Luang Wildlife Sanctuary in Loei Province died during a relocation by officials from the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation. This relocation was prompted by a lawsuit filed by villagers in Khon Kaen Province with the Administrative Court regarding agricultural crop damage caused by wild elephants. The villagers' fear of human-elephant confrontations has exacerbated the conflict, leading to significant losses for everyone involved.

The primary factors driving elephant encroachment into agricultural areas are the declining abundance of forest resources and the resulting lack of food. This scarcity is often caused by human activities such as deforestation, foraging, hunting, and land clearing for farming. As natural food becomes scarce, wildlife is forced into nearby communities and agricultural zones, leading to frequent conflicts. These recent incidents have raised urgent questions within society: Are humans encroaching too far into natural habitats? Why is there an insufficient food supply in forests, forcing wildlife to enter villages and pose a danger to both parties? Ultimately, we must find new approaches to conservation so that humans, wildlife, and nature can coexist sustainably.

GISTDA has developed “ LANDX ”, an innovative platform that applies space and geoinformatics technology to manage land use. This tool monitors changes in physical land characteristics and other critical data through three main features:

Feature 1: Land Monitoring – This feature tracks changes in agricultural, forest, and residential zones. By utilizing satellite imagery, it can detect forest encroachment and analyze up to 40 years of historical data. It also monitors flood-prone areas and identifies nationwide hotspots monthly.

Feature 2: EUDR (EU Deforestation-free Regulation) – This feature supports geo-location verification to confirm land-use history. It ensures that the export of seven regulated commodities to the European Union complies with sustainability standards, verifying that products do not originate from deforested areas or overlap with legally protected forest zones.

Feature 3:The final feature, National Land – Designed for government officials, this feature monitors land-use changes in areas allocated according to the National Land Policy Committee's guidelines. Collectively, these three features provide essential data for tracking environmental changes and planning appropriate land use and development across those areas.
