Fighting Wildfires with Data: How Satellite Technology Is Transforming Forest Fire Surveillance and Fuel Management

Early March has brought a wave of wildfire reports across Thailand, with GISTDA confirming a surge in hotspots concentrated in northern forest areas — Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Lampang, Phrae, and others. The signal is unmistakable: fire season has arrived.

Wildfires need three elements to ignite: fuel, oxygen, and heat — what scientists call the "fire triangle." With El Niño, global warming, and rising temperatures all converging, that triangle is becoming increasingly dangerous. Thailand's wildfire season runs from December through May each year, when dry conditions and strong winds can turn a small spark into an unstoppable blaze.

Geography makes the problem worse. Deciduous forests across the North and West begin shedding leaves between February and March, carpeting the ground with dry fuel. On steep mountain slopes, fire can race uphill far faster than across flat terrain. The most critical window — March to April, just before the summer storms arrive — is when hotspot counts can spike dramatically, in both agricultural zones and deep forest alike. This is precisely why officials must act early. Proactive fuel management — clearing dry vegetation before it can accumulate — is the frontline strategy for cutting fires off before they spiral out of control.

Comparing February data tells an encouraging story. Cumulative hotspot counts detected by the VIIRS satellite system dropped by 45% compared to the same period last year. Analysts attribute the decline to a combination of factors: La Niña bringing increased rainfall and cooler days in late 2025 and early 2026, as well as a government-wide burn ban covering agricultural land from February 1 to March 31, 2026, alongside provincial prohibitions on open burning in all forest and open areas — except under approved fuel management plans.

But March has pushed back hard. In the first week of the month alone, 5,758 hotspots were recorded nationwide — with more than 70% concentrated in northern forests. The trend line is climbing, and current 2026 cumulative figures are on track to surpass 2022 levels, a year that also began under La Niña conditions. The concern now is what comes next. As La Niña weakens, hotter and drier conditions are expected to follow. Once the agricultural burn ban lifts, April could see hotspot numbers rise sharply — particularly along the volatile edges where farmland meets forest, where controlled burns for land preparation can quickly escape into the trees.

A constellation of 5 satellites now delivers up to 10 hotspot detection reports per day, with precise coordinates transmitted to the ground within two hours of each pass, all processed and verified by GISTDA before reaching field teams. The data doesn't just speed up response times; it also gets aggregated into heat maps that expose fire distribution patterns across the country, giving commanders the situational awareness to prioritize crews, plan fuel management operations, and contain damage before it spirals. As Thailand pushes deeper into its most dangerous months, one thing is clear: in the fight against wildfires, real-time information is as powerful as any firefighter on the ground.
