Faith from Space: THEOS-2 Reveals Makha Bucha in Breathtaking Detail.

This Makha Bucha Day, GISTDA is giving you a view like no other — straight from space. Our THEOS-2 satellite captured this breathtaking shot of a magnificent golden chedi, gleaming under the sun from hundreds of kilometres above Earth. More than just stunning architecture, this golden glow represents over 2,500 years of deep-rooted Buddhist faith — a light that has never dimmed.

.

Scroll back in time to the Buddha's era… today was a day of miracles.

.

Makha Bucha falls on the 15th full moon of the 3rd lunar month. Many know this day by another name: "Jaturongkhasannibat" — the day when 4 extraordinary events happened simultaneously, without any prior arrangement:

.

A full moon night under the Makha lunar constellation, illuminating the entire sky

1,250 monks gathered spontaneously — no invitation, no announcement, no plan

Every single monk was "Ehibhikkhu" — personally ordained by the Buddha himself

Every single monk had attained "Arahantship" — fully enlightened, free from all earthly desires

.

Most significantly, it was on this very day that the Lord Buddha delivered the Ovāda-Pātimokkha — considered the very heart of Buddhist teachings. Its essence is beautifully simple yet profoundly powerful: refrain from all evil, do only good, and purify the mind. These three principles continue to guide the lives of millions of Buddhists to this day, making Makha Bucha one of the most sacred and deeply revered occasions in the Buddhist calendar.

Nestled in the village of Gorai on the northwestern tip of Mumbai, Maharashtra, this magnificent structure rises as a testament to Buddhist devotion. Built entirely on donated land and funded by the faithful, the Global Vipassana Pagoda stands at the confluence of the Gorai promontory and the Arabian Sea — a breathtaking setting that amplifies its spiritual presence. At its heart, the pagoda enshrines sacred relics of Gautama Buddha himself. Its crown jewel is a vast meditation dome capable of accommodating up to 8,000 practitioners simultaneously — the largest column-free meditation dome in the world. Beyond meditation, the complex houses museums and libraries chronicling the life of the Buddha and the timeless teachings of Buddhism. Architecturally, the pagoda commands attention: 96.12 meters tall and 97.46 meters in diameter, it draws direct inspiration from the iconic Shwedagon Pagoda of Yangon, Myanmar — reimagined through a masterful fusion of ancient Indian craftsmanship and modern engineering. More than just a monument, the Global Vipassana Pagoda stands as a living symbol of universal peace and the enduring power of Buddhist faith.

The Global Vipassana Pagoda has become a must-visit destination in Mumbai, easily accessible by local transport from the city. It draws pilgrims and travellers from both within India and abroad, especially during significant Buddhist occasions.
