Global trend in the use of Geo-informatics technology

The geographic information system (GIS) is the most popular technology in the world, followed by global navigation satellite system (GNSS) and remote sensing system respectively. Presently, the sensor system has been developed, allowing every country worldwide to solve the problem of access to spatial data, and the use of spatial data has become widespread across the Middle East and Europe.

The Geospatial World Readers’ Survey 2014 revealed that the readers classified technology into two groups. The first is conventional technology including GIS, GNSS, Remote Sensing, and Aerial photography. The second group is modern technology which includes Building Information Modelling (BIM), 3D model, Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) , Indoor Positioning , Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs).

From the graph, it is seen that among conventional technologies, GIS is likely to be most popular, followed by GNSS, Remote Sensing, and Aerial photography respectively. For modern technologies, LiDAR is likely to be most popular, followed by BIM, and there is possibility for Indoor Positioning to become more popular, and this technology  will also push forward the use of GNSS. The BIM and 3D model technologies are mostly involved with spatial integration while the UAVs is under process of regulating its use in each region.
