Tokyo Skytree viewed from space taken from the Thailand Earth Observation Satellite (THEOS)

Since the past, one of the services provided by the Remote Sensing Technology Center of Japan (RESTEC) has been the distribution of THEOS* images. Prior to the opening of the Tokyo Skytree, RESTEC has provided the satellite image of the area around the Skytree at no charge

The river flowing downward from the top center of the image toward Tokyo Bay is the Sumida River. Tokyo Skytree, visible from the right side of the upper part of the Sumida River, held its grand opening on 22 May 2012 as a new symbol for Japan located in Tokyo’s Sumida-ku. We can also see the large shadow of the Skytree, which is the world’s tallest free-standing tower standing at 634m. On the left of the Sumida River, green areas such as Ueno Park along the JR tracks, the Imperial Palace, and Hamarikyu Garden are visible

THEOS is mounted with optical sensors of 15m resolution with color information and 2m black-and-white resolution. These sensors are able to observe ground information by changing their angles. Architectural structures such as buildings appear three-dimensional in this image as it was taken through ground observation from an oblique angle. Looking at the length of the structure’s shadow, we can see that the Tokyo Skytree is an extremely tall structure

*THEOS images Thailand Earth Observation System (THEOS) is the first Thai earth observation satellite launched by the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) on 1 October 2008. As a wide-area, regular observation tool, THEOS is expected to play an active role in areas such as the creation of maps, observation of disasters, monitoring of the environment, and agriculture and forestry. RESTEC is the only authorized distributor for THEOS data in Japan.
